Projects:
Mock Production Meeting
Each student will be assigned a job as a member of a fictional production team. Each student will be responsible for researching and collecting all information needed by a professional member of the production meeting.
Scene Design Project:
Each student will choose a play to research. The student will be responsible for creating a design for a major scene in the play and will present the design along with a collection of research that was collected when designing the scene.
Technical Director Project:
Students will create a technical drawing for a selected piece of furnature from their scene design. The technical drawing will be turned in with a table indicating the cost of materials to construct the piece.
Monologue:
Students will select a monologue from a play, approved by the instructor. Students will mark the monologue and demonstrate an actor’s knowledge of the character and will perform it for the class.
Directing Project:
Throughout the final term students will be divided into groups of three and assigned a scene containing 2 charactors. One student in the group will act as the director and the other two as actors. This project will be during the last term and should demonstrate a through knowledge of the acting and directing concepts covered in class.
Quizzes:
There will be several small quizzes throughout the year that will cover readings done outside of class as well as lecture material. Quizzes will be short answer and usually less than 5 questions.
Writing Assignments:
Students will be required to attend 3 theatrical events approved by the instructor and write reviews of various aspects of the performance. Students will be asked to write one review focusing on the quality and style of the actors, and evaluating choices made by the actors in character development. Of the other two, one must focus on the technical aspects of the performance, choices made by designers and their impact on the performance. Students may choose to focus on costume, lighting, sound, or scene design for this review. For the final review students may evaluate either the acting or the technical aspects of the show, but not both.
One additional review will be accepted for 15 points of extra credit that will be added to the writing assignment portion of the student’s grade.
In-Class Assignments:
In class assignments will consist mainly of responses to films or performances seen in class, as well as journaling activities.
Production Assignments:
Students will all be required to take part in producing our two shows this season. Students will be assigned a job that may take place during the run of the show or before it opens. It is expected that students who are assigned a run-crew job be present for all performances. Students who have production responsibilities will be required to meet all deadlines set up by the instructor.
It is important for students to see the importance of folloing through with responsibilities fro performances, which is why this portion of the course carries such a large part of the grade. Any concerns about this project, that a student may have should be discussed with the instructor as soon as they arise.

Welcome
Theatre Arts is designed to provide an overview of the theatre as an art form: it’s nature, elements, genres, styles, and techniques. Course content is based upon the supposition that knowledge of theatre—whether as an active participant, reader of good plays, or audience member—is a significant means of enriching individual human existence.

I hope you all are looking forward to an exciting year. I cant wait to meet you in the spring.
